Fire Hydrants are to be placed on these mains when formed. On these mains Hydrants are to be placed - I assume, from the nature of the existing Water supply the independent System of Tanks and mains is absolutely necessary to obtain the effective pressure and to preserve the purity of the domestic service.
These facts being so, I cannot object to the proposed arrangement. In England it is not however usual to have separate mains, both for domestic uses and for Fire services - but to use the same mains for both. This is where the source is at sufficient elevation to give the required pressure and the water is sufficiently abundant.
I have noted the mode in which the Engineer proposes to construct the tanks and in my opinion there may be some saving of money in this work. The sites of the tanks are in Granite. This is fissured and porous, but I assume otherwise sound. So in place of heavy linings and walls of Portland cement concrete and wall set in Portland cement mortar, I would be content with cleaning the surfaces of the rock and thin pointing.
All the open surfaces are to be covered with Portland cement mortar laid three coats of such first, and then two additional coats of half inch each. The Tanks proposed to be constructed in sloping ground so that there must be a wall on the outer side as is shown on...
